What is this “Somatic” fad? And what does it really mean?
If you’ve come across the term "somatic" peppered everywhere the wellness world and are wondering what’s the deal - look no further! I’m not a fan of faddish names and there are many: “wild”, “conscious” , “embodied”… and whilst these words can make us turn green 🤢… at times there are no better substitutes.
Let’s dive into what "somatic" really means and why it’s more than just a passing fad.
Somatic Means “Of the Body”
The word somatic comes from the Greek word soma, meaning body. Somatic practices focus on the body as an essential part of healing and transformation. Rather than analyzing emotions or experiences only with the mind, somatic work involves tuning into the body’s sensations, patterns, and responses. It recognizes that we store stress, trauma, and even joy within our physical being—and that the body plays a crucial role in processing and releasing these experiences.
Why Somatic Work Goes Beyond Traditional Coaching and Therapy
In traditional talk therapy or coaching, the focus is often on analyzing thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors to create change. Somatic work, however, digs into how our body holds and processes these experiences. Techniques like breathwork, grounding exercises, or EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) help us connect to our body’s wisdom and release tension or emotional blocks that the mind alone may struggle to let go.
For many women, this embodied approach can be a game-changer, particularly for those who feel "stuck" despite understanding their issues on a mental level. It’s not just about knowing what holds us back; that’s the easy bit, somatic tools help us feel and move through those barriers, creating lasting change from the inside out.
Somatic Work is More Than a Fad—It’s a Path to True Transformation
While somatic practices may be trending right now, their roots go back centuries to ancient traditions that honored the mind-body connection. Today’s somatic coaching brings these insights into a modern context, offering tools that help women reconnect with their innate wisdom, regulate their emotions, and step confidently into love and fulfillment.
So, while "somatic" might seem like a buzzword, it’s a proven, body-centered approach to healing and growth. By embracing it, you’re giving yourself the gift of a more integrated, powerful path to transformation.
